Frequently ask questions:
We get several e-mails and calls from people requesting information on how to become a constable in Tennessee. Constables for the most part are elected from county voting precincts in which they reside. The first place to start is your County Election Commission Office. This office should have all the information you need to get your election campaign started.
Most Constables are elected to four year terms, although a few are still two year terms.
Once elected you will have to attend a forty hour in-service class. The in-service class will be sponsored by the Tennessee Constable Council or by the Tennessee Constables' Association. The in-service will consist of classes on different subjects some of which may include: Domestic Violence laws, firearm safety, emergency vehicle operations, DUI laws, vehicle child restraint laws, process serving, traffic laws, serving warrants, writing reports, chemical weapons, meth labs, handcuffing, self defense, legal updates, etc. Constables are also required to be certified on their firearms. Each year the TCC tries to use P.O.S.T. certified instructors when available.
